Brett Wier (b. 1978) is an Australian artist born in Bairnsdale, Victoria. He graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne in 1999. Wier is known for his abstract paintings created through a distinctive process that involves layered enamel on metal panels, often applied with tools such as brushes and scrapers. Working from his studio in a remote coastal region of Victoria, he develops artworks shaped by an intuitive and exploratory approach. His practice is deeply informed by the spectrum and traditions of music, drawing on influences ranging from Jimi Hendrix to Beethoven. He combines rigorous technical research with spontaneity - beginning with systematic studies of how materials behave, and then allowing the unexpected to guide the evolution of each piece. The result is a body of work he describes as “studied chaos”: paintings that balance control and chance and align with an art-historical tradition of embracing accident. He seeks an immediate, fluid visual language that can be experienced with the same openness as one listens to music. In addition to numerous solo exhibitions in Australia and Switzerland, Wier recently appeared in the documentary Homeby Swiss filmmaker Dominik Gehring, which was screened in cinemas in Copenhagen and Berlin in October 2025.
